Calendula is one of my favorite flowers to grow in my garden. Not only is it easy to grow and collect seeds. The bright flowers are useful in making your own natural skin care products. Natural skincare has gained significant attention as more people seek gentle, effective alternatives to synthetic products. Among the many botanicals used in skincare, calendula stands out for its soothing and healing properties. This bright orange flower, also known as “pot marigold” has been used for centuries in traditional remedies and is now a popular ingredient in natural skincare formulations.

What Makes Calendula Special for Skin
Calendula officinalis contains compounds that help calm inflammation and promote skin repair. These include flavonoids, carotenoids, and essential oils, which work together to:
Reduce redness and irritation
Support wound healing
Provide antioxidant protection
Hydrate and nourish the skin
Because of these properties, calendula is suitable for sensitive, dry, or damaged skin. It is often used in creams, oils, and balms designed to soothe eczema, minor burns, insect bites, and other skin irritations.
Benefits of Calendula in Skincare
Soothes Sensitive and Irritated Skin
Calendula’s anti-inflammatory effects make it ideal for calming sensitive skin prone to redness or itching. People with conditions like rosacea or dermatitis often find relief using calendula-based products.
Supports Healing of Minor Wounds and Burns
Research shows calendula can speed up the healing process by stimulating new tissue growth and reducing inflammation. Applying calendula ointment to small cuts or sunburns can help skin recover faster.
Provides Antioxidant Protection
The antioxidants in calendula protect skin cells from damage caused by free radicals, which contribute to premature aging. Regular use can help maintain a youthful, radiant complexion.
Hydrates and Nourishes Skin
Calendula extracts contain moisturizing compounds that improve skin hydration and barrier function. This helps prevent dryness and keeps skin soft and supple.
How to Use Calendula in Your Skincare Routine

Calendula-Infused Oil
You can make your own calendula oil by steeping dried calendula flowers in a carrier oil like olive or jojoba for several weeks. This oil can be applied directly to the skin or used as a base for homemade creams and balms. Note: when creating infused oils only use dried plant materials as you do not want to any extra moisture to your oils where bacteria could grow.
Calendula Creams and Balms
Many natural skincare brands offer creams and balms containing calendula extract. These are convenient for daily moisturizing or targeted treatment of irritated areas. Make sure when reading labels that calendula is one of the first 5 ingredeints listed.
Calendula Tea for Skin Rinses
Brewing calendula tea and using it as a gentle skin rinse can reduce inflammation and refresh the skin. This method is especially helpful for soothing acne-prone or sensitive skin.
Calendula Face Masks
Mix calendula powder or infused oil with natural ingredients like honey or yogurt to create calming face masks. These masks can reduce redness and provide deep hydration. You can easily make calendula powder by processing dried flower heads in a food processor or clean coffee grinder.
Practical Tips for Choosing Calendula Products
Look for products with high-quality, organic calendula extract to ensure potency and safety.
Avoid formulas with harsh chemicals or synthetic fragrances that can irritate sensitive skin.
Patch test new products on a small skin area to check for any allergic reactions.
Combine calendula products with a gentle skincare routine that includes cleansing and sun protection.
Scientific Support for Calendula’s Effectiveness
Several studies back calendula’s benefits for skin health. For example, a 2016 clinical trial found that calendula ointment helped heal radiation-induced dermatitis in cancer patients faster than standard treatments. Another study showed calendula’s anti-inflammatory effects reduced skin irritation caused by eczema.
While more research is needed to fully understand all mechanisms, current evidence supports calendula as a safe and effective natural skincare ingredient.
Who Should Use Calendula Skincare
Calendula is suitable for most skin types but especially benefits:
People with sensitive or reactive skin
Those with dry or flaky skin needing extra hydration
Individuals recovering from minor wounds, burns, or insect bites
Anyone looking for gentle, natural skincare options
People with allergies to plants in the Asteraceae family (such as ragweed or daisies) should exercise caution and consult a dermatologist before use.

Making Calendula Part of Your Daily Care
Incorporating calendula into your skincare routine can be simple and rewarding. Start with a calendula-infused moisturizer or balm and observe how your skin responds. For extra care, try a weekly calendula face mask or use calendula tea as a refreshing rinse.
